AI policy
Where these tools are used, and where they are not.
Hullside uses AI tools in production, and says so. The rules below are what keep that from becoming a problem for the reader.
What a human always does
- Every article is reported, edited and signed by a named human, who is accountable for it. There are no synthetic bylines on Hullside.
- Every fact, figure and quote is verified against its primary source by a person before publication. A model's summary of a document is not a source.
- Every internal link is checked to point at something we actually published.
What AI is used for
- Research assistance: finding documents, filings and recall notices worth reading.
- Transcription of interviews, video and recorded calls, checked against the audio.
- Extracting specification rows from brochures and spec sheets, each row then sourced.
- Copy editing, headline options and structural suggestions on human-written drafts.
- Engineering: this site is built with AI assistance, under human review.
What AI is not used for
- Generating articles for publication without a human reporting and rewriting them.
- Producing photography. Hullside publishes real editorial images of real boats. We do not publish AI-generated or AI-upscaled images of boats, and we do not pass off a rendering as a photograph.
- Producing prices. No figure in our recorded-sales data is model-generated. Estimates are computed from documented records and labelled as estimates.
- Inventing quotes, sources, statistics or prior coverage.
Crawlers
Hullside welcomes AI assistants and search crawlers that cite their sources and send readers back. We decline bulk training crawlers that take the work and return nothing. The current policy is published, and machine-readable, at /robots.txt.
